ACL and Knee Injury Recovery

A knee injury can sideline you from everything you love doing. At Synergy Physical Therapy in Scottsdale, we help you figure out what's wrong and build a plan that actually gets you back; not just functional, but fully recovered.

Your knee hurts. Maybe it happened all at once: a pop during a game, a bad landing, a sudden twist. Or maybe it's been building for a while and now it's affecting everything: walking, stairs, sleep, workouts.

Knee injuries are incredibly common, but that doesn't make them simple. What's causing your pain matters, and the treatment should match the cause. At Synergy Physical Therapy in Scottsdale, we figure out exactly what's going on and build a program around that, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether you've been told you have an ACL tear, a meniscus issue, arthritis, tendon pain, or something that hasn't been diagnosed yet, we've treated it, and we can help.

A thorough assessment is the first step toward understanding exactly what is going on with your knee.
Quick Facts
Do I need surgery for a torn ACL?
Not always. Some people do well without surgery, especially if they're not trying to get back to high-demand sports or activities that require a lot of cutting and pivoting. Your orthopedic doctor and our team can help you weigh the options based on your lifestyle and how your knee responds to treatment.
How long does it take to recover from a knee injury?
It really depends on what's injured. Mild sprains might be a few weeks. ACL reconstruction is typically a 9 to 12 month process before returning to full sport. Most knee conditions fall somewhere in between. We'll give you an honest estimate at your first visit.
Can physical therapy help knee pain even without a diagnosis?
Yes. A lot of patients come to us with knee pain that hasn't been fully diagnosed yet. We can assess what's going on, start reducing your pain, and help guide you toward the right next step.

Why Knee Rehab Takes Time, and Why That's Okay

Progressive strengthening is the core of effective knee injury rehabilitation.

If you've had ACL surgery, you might be feeling pretty good by three or four months in and wondering why you're still doing PT. Here's the honest answer: feeling good and being ready to return to full activity are two different things.

The muscles around your knee need to be rebuilt to a level where they can actually protect the joint under real-world stress. Getting back too soon significantly raises your risk of re-injury. We use objective strength testing to make return-to-activity decisions, not just how your knee feels on a given day.

Knee Conditions We Treat

We work with patients dealing with all kinds of knee problems:

ACL Tears (With or Without Surgery)
MCL and LCL Sprains
Meniscus Tears
Patellar Tendon Pain (Jumper's Knee)
Kneecap Pain (Runner's Knee)
IT Band Pain
Knee Replacement Recovery
Knee Arthritis

What Your Knee PT Actually Looks Like

We start with a thorough assessment: understanding what hurts, when it hurts, what makes it better and worse, and what you were doing before this happened. Then we build a program from there.

Early on, we focus on reducing pain and swelling and getting your range of motion back. From there we build strength in the muscles that support your knee. Then we work on the movement patterns: how your knee handles the demands of walking, running, stairs, sports, or whatever matters to you.

Getting your knee better isn't just about the injury healing. It's about making sure the muscles and movement patterns around it are strong enough to protect it for the long haul.

What About Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training?

After knee surgery, your quad muscle shuts down fast, and you often can't do heavy leg exercises safely for months. Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training lets us rebuild quad strength using very light weights, which means we can start making real progress well before your knee is ready for heavy loading.

Common Questions

Can I walk on a torn ACL?
Many people can, yes. But being able to walk doesn't tell you much about the severity of the injury. If your knee is significantly swollen, unstable, or won't straighten or bend fully, get it evaluated. Don't try to push through it.
What happens if I skip PT after ACL surgery?
Your risk of re-injury goes way up, and you're likely to have chronic weakness and instability in that knee. The rehab is where the recovery actually happens. The surgery just creates the conditions for it.
Do you work with athletes?
Absolutely. We work with competitive athletes, recreational athletes, and everyone in between. We understand the goal of getting back to sport and build programs that reflect that, including sport-specific movement work in the later phases.
